Korhogo cloth is made by the Senufo people of a community by the same name in Ivory Coast (West Africa). The cloth is traditionally created in neutral and earth tones. It is made by hand painting designs by hand-woven and hand-spun cotton fabric, with a specially fermented mud-based and natural vegetal pigment that darkens over time. Both men and women are involved in the making of the cloth - cultivating the cotton, women spin it into yarn, prepare the dye while the men weave and decorate the cloth.
The designs are usually symbols of humans, animals, and other natural elements like the sun, moon and stars, all of which are rooted in Senufo culture and mythology.
The people use the cloth as a shield against vengeful spirits by wearing them or hanging them in their homes or shrines. Today Korhogo cloth is commissioned for Rites of Passage events like funerals and special ceremonies.
